Westcom Business Communications Ltd. Was selected to design and implement a comprehensive Wi-Fi solution for both guests and corporate users at the Ford Castle site.
The goal was to provide reliable, high-performance connectivity across the entire site. Given that Ford Castle is a Grade 1 listed building, extra care was needed in both the design and execution phases. The team navigated a range of regulations and challenges unique to listed properties, making this a particularly complex project to manage.
Project Overview: The deployment involved installing state-of-the-art wireless access points (APs) and network cabinets, along with extensive cabling and infrastructure upgrades. Key aspects of the project included:
Cabling Installation
The cabling was designed to meet or exceed CAT5e standards, ensuring consistent and reliable connectivity throughout the site. Cable routes were carefully planned, with necessary adjustments made during installation to maintain optimal performance.
Network Cabinets
We installed 10 new network cabinets at various strategic locations to support the network’s infrastructure. Each cabinet was selected and positioned to maximise network performance and ease of access.
Fibre Links and Connectivity
For the fibre installation, we leveraged existing centenaries and ducts, ensuring they were tested for suitability to support the necessary cable work. Where needed, we added new short-length centenaries, pre-approved for use in low-impact areas away from busy footpaths and walkways.
Wireless Connectivity Design
The Wi-Fi solution was a blend of point-to-point (PTP) and point-to-multipoint (PTMP) wireless links, using high-speed 60GHz PTP technology for seamless, fast connections across the site. Access points were primarily installed in communal areas, like lounges, to minimize disruption in guest rooms. In certain cases, AP lights were turned off to prevent any inconvenience.
End Outcome
The end result was a highly reliable, seamless Wi-Fi solution that supports both guest and corporate needs, while respecting the challenges of working within a listed building.
