Project: 72 Bed Ward

Wye Valley NHS Trust had the opportunity to enhance the ward facilities at Hereford County Hospital, recognised as the leading centre for acute hospital care in the region. A new expansion of 72 beds was implemented as part of Boris Johnson’s ‘build back better, greener, faster’ initiative.
Westcom successfully won the contract to provide the networks for this three-story ward development.
The project features 72 bed spaces distributed across three wards, each with 24 beds, along with essential ancillary areas such as dedicated receptions on every floor, staff bases, and assessment rooms, all supported by a plant room on the top floor. The new building is connected to the existing hospital at ground level through specially designed link corridors.
At Westcom we were heavily involved in the planning, design and implementation of the data networking project on the 72 Bed ward. Using our expertise we were able to design the Wye Valley Trust Network and Emergency fall back system to keep up with the need for a reliable communication system within a busy hospital.
The process included implementing the fibre optic cabling for the Wye Valley Trust network to support computer devices, the wireless network, and door access, Installing the infrastructure to support the Building Management System. As well as installing the telephony to support the main hospital switch board and emergency fall back phones (red Phones).
The 72-bed ward project occurred during the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. Throughout the process, the on-site team worked in close proximity to an active Covid-19 ward, prioritizing the safety of patients and staff by maintaining high standards of social distancing and cleanliness at all times.
